HCI International : One Hundred Seventh Newsletter

With everyone’s health and safety in mind, HCII2021 will be organized and run as a virtual conference under the auspices of 21 distinguished international boards, one for each Thematic Area / Affiliated Conference.

An award will be presented to the Best Paper of each of the HCII 2021 Thematic Areas / Affiliated Conferences and the Best Poster extended abstract.

The Conference Proceedings are published by Springer in a multi-volume set. Papers will appear in volumes of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) and Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) series. Poster Extended Abstracts in the form of short research papers will be published in the Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS) series. So far, 1276 papers and 241 posters have already been accepted to be presented during the Conference and to be published in the proceedings to appear just before the start of the conference.

The Conference Program is adapted to suit the needs of the virtual format. Parallel sessions and tutorials will run concurrently over the six-day period (24-29 July 2021). In this way, the daily load of the conference is four hours (two sessions, two-hours each, with a half-hour break in-between).

HCII 2021: Submissions for "Late Breaking Work"

You still have the opportunity to present the latest results of your work to an international audience, by submitting a proposal for a Paper or a Poster presentation.

Submit "Late Breaking Work" - PAPER proposals: Prospective authors should submit extended abstracts (800 words) corresponding to one of the Conference Thematic Areas. Following a fast-track peer-review process, a decision is communicated to the authors. After acceptance, the authors, apart from giving an oral presentation during the Conference, will also have the opportunity of having a full paper included in the "HCII 2021 - Late Breaking Papers" Springer LNCS Proceedings to be published after the conference, according to the below timetable:

Deadline for abstract submission: Submission open until 21 May 2021
Notification of review outcome: 1 week after submission
Deadline for camera-ready submission and registration: 11 June 2021

Submit "Late Breaking Work" - POSTER proposals: Prospective authors should submit abstracts (300 words). Following a fast-track peer-review process, a decision is communicated to the authors. After acceptance, the authors, apart from presenting their work during the Conference, will also have the opportunity of having an extended poster abstract (short research paper) included in the "HCII 2021 - Late Breaking Posters" Springer CCIS Proceedings to be published after the conference, according to the below timetable:

Deadline for abstract submission: Submission open until 21 May 2021
Notification of review outcome: 1 week after submission
Deadline for camera-ready submission and registration: 11 June 2021

The “Late Breaking Work” paper and poster volumes, published after the conference, together with the volumes to be published before the conference, will comprise the full set of the HCII 2021 Springer Conference Proceedings.

World Usability Day - Design Challenge Awards 2021 sponsored by the HCI International Conference

World Usability Day is pleased to announce the sponsorship by and collaboration with the HCI International (HCII) conference for the annual Design Challenge. This collaboration brings together two organizations who have similar and supporting goals. HCII provides an international forum for the dissemination and exchange of up-to-date scientific information on theoretical, generic and applied areas. World Usability Day aims to raise standards so that technology works to harness human potential. This work is accomplished by building a community of common practice and supporting it through events occurring around the world; thus, different communities can be brought to work together to make our world an easier place to live for all.

The Gold, Silver and Bronze recipients of the World Usability Day Design Challenge Awards are cordially invited, with complimentary registration, to present their innovative, impactful design at the HCI International Conferences. The announcement of the winners for the upcoming competition will be on the World Usability Day, 11 November 2021 and the awards will be conferred during the HCII 2022 conference opening ceremony, on the 28th of June 2022 in Gothenburg, Sweden, where they are invited to present their work on the 29th of June 2022.

A new Google Group on Human-Centered AI, by Ben Shneiderman

Ben Shneiderman (ben@cs.umd.edu) has formed a new Google Group on Human-Centered AI to promote ethical, responsible, trustworthy, explainable, humane, human-compatible, human-centric, or human-centered AI. This Google Group will enable coordination to advance these ideas by forming research collaborations, developing courses, and running workshops, conferences, and journals. They develop design guidelines for control panels, user interfaces, and large displays to enable users to better control their supertools and active appliances.
