Editorial:Breadth, Depth, and the Future of HCI

Worldwide there are over 60,000 people working in HCI related research, development, and implementation in at least 80 countries. They contribute to the effective use of technology which is increasing productivity, competitiveness, and quality of life. In order to foster collaboration and cooperation among the international HCI communities, the HCI International series of conferences was inaugurated exactly 20 years ago.

Join experts from around the world to understand the impact of internationalization on user interface design, share experiences in designing for global markets, and understand the future trends in internationalization.

The HCI International 2003 conference included participants from 51 countries who represented the leading scientists and practitioners in HCI from around the world. In past HCI International conferences, about 60% of all conference registrants came from abroad. HCI International 2005, the 11th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, which will be held 22-29 July 2005 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, will capture the whole breadth and depth of the discipline by having 7 HCI affiliated conferences run concurrently with HCI International. These include the following:

• Symposium on Human Interface (Japanese)
• 6th International Conference on Engineering Psychology & Cognitive Ergonomics
• 3rd International Conference on Universal Access in Human-Computer Interaction
• 1st International Conference on Virtual Reality
• 1st International Conference on Usability and Internationalization
• 1st International Conference on Augmented Cognition
• 1st International Conference on Online Communities and Social Computering

The content knowledge captured in the above upcoming conferences not only will present the latest research, development and practices but also pinpoint future thrust areas of HCI.

The future of HCI will include the following:

• Advances in signal processing will create innovative powerful mobile communication modes on such devices as cell phones.
• HCI will become a standard required course in all computer science and engineering courses. This will empower a broad spectrum of professionals to integrate HCI know-how into their design which will reduce the need for individuals dedicated to HCI research and development. It is projected that it will take about 20 years to achieve this objective.
• Industrial Psychologists, who frequently design jobs, advocate enriching (as opposed to simplifying) the jobs so as to provide an opportunity for psychological growth of the individual whereas HCI professionals advocate simplifying the interaction. HCI must be considered as part of the individual's job and hence need to integrate it within the industrial psychology concept of job design.
• Major shifts in corporate emphasis from development to basic generic research is taking place so that major progress in HCI would be achieved by elevating it to the next level.

Recently, the IBM UK Product Usability Design Group (PUDG) developed the Usable Tour, a series of UCD flavored activities for school children. Its aim was to put a different spin on IT, teach the students a little something about UCD all while giving them hands-on experience with the An article summarizing PUDG's rationale for developing the tour, and the lessons learned.
