HCI International 2025

22-27 June 2025 - Gothenburg, Sweden

HCI International 2025, the 27th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, was held as an 'on-site' Conference with the additional option for 'on-line' participation, from 22-27 June at the Gothia Towers Hotel and Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre, Gothenburg, Sweden, under the auspices of 21 distinguished international boards of 505 Members from 51 Countries.

The first three days of the Conference (22-24 June) comprised 'on-line' parallel sessions for paper presentations, 'on-site' and 'on-line' Courses (formerly Tutorials) and 'hybrid' Workshops (allowing both 'on-site' and 'on-line' presentations). The Opening Plenary Session (evening of the 24th of June) and the parallel sessions that took place between 25-27 June run as 'hybrid' events (i.e., available 'on-site' and 'on-line' for presenters and participants).

This year, 2710 individuals (1601 on-line and 1109 on-site) from 75 countries participated in this truly international in scope event, where the work of world leaders in the field was presented.

The Conference program included:

  • 16 courses (formerly tutorials)
  • 5 workshops
  • 358 parallel sessions (169 on-line and 189 hybrid)

Springer (part of Springer Nature) is the publisher of the Conference Proceedings as a multi-volume set. A total of 7972 individuals from academia, research institutes, industry, and government agencies from 92 countries submitted contributions. 1430 papers and 355 posters (as short research papers) are included in the 67 volumes of the proceedings published just before the start of the Conference. 497 papers and 111 posters are also accepted for inclusion in the ‘HCII 2025 - Late Breaking Work" volumes of the Proceedings to be published after the Conference. All volumes together will comprise the full set of the HCII 2025 Conference Proceedings.

For the first time in its history, the HCII Conference organized poster pitches sessions. Poster pitches are brief oral presentations allowing ‘on-site’ poster presenters to highlight the core ideas, motivation, and contribution of their work to a broader audience.

As established in previous years, twenty-two awards were conferred during the Opening Plenary Session. The awards, in the form of a plaque and a certificate, were presented to the author(s) of the Best Paper of each Thematic Area / Affiliated Conference and of the Best Poster.

Susan Dumais (Technical Fellow and Director of the Microsoft Research Labs in USA and in Canada, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Washington, USA) joined us as the keynote speaker at the Opening Plenary Session. Her keynote entitled: " Information Seeking and Sensemaking from Libraries, the Web, and Beyond" was also her acceptance speech for the HCII 2025 award ‘HCI Medal for Societal Impact’.

In the context of the HCII 2025 Student Design Competition, a nine-member international committee acted as the jury and evaluated the accepted submissions (all of which were presented during the conference). Three awards were conferred during the Opening Plenary Session, each carrying a prize: the GOLD received $1,000 USD, the SILVER $500 USD and the BRONZE $250 USD.

A Students’ networking social event, complimentary for registered student participants, took place in the evening of the 26th of June, offering students the opportunity to get together and exchange ideas in a truly international and multicultural setting.

The ‘HCII 2025 Design Café’, an interactive satellite event, was held ‘in-person’ during the HCII 2025 Conference. The focus of the HCII Design Café was on Human-AI Teaming (HAT).

The HCII Conference has established a long-term collaboration with the World Usability Initiative (WUI), founded and directed by Elizabeth Rosenzweig. The 2024 World Usability Initiative (WUI) Design Challenge with theme "Designing for a Better World" award winners were announced on World Usability Day, 14 November 2024. The Design Challenge Awards (Gold $1,250; Silver $1,000; and Bronze $750), sponsored by the HCII2025 Conference, were conferred during the Opening Plenary Session. The three award winners were invited, with complimentary registration, and presented their work in a special hybrid session on the 27th of June.

We would like to thank each and every one of the Conference participants for their valuable contribution towards the success of this Conference, and we look forward to welcoming you all in the HCII 2026 Conference, to be held in Montreal Convention Centre, Montreal, Canada, 26-31 July 2026.
