HCII 2016: VISA to travel to Canada

The Government of Canada has recently introduced a new entry requirement, known as an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) that applies to visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to or transiting Canada by air. (A visa-exempt foreign national is a person who is not a citizen of Canada and is not required to obtain a visa for the purpose of travel based on their country of nationality).

Effective March 15, 2016, visa-exempt foreign nationals must obtain an eTA before they can board a flight to Canada. To complete an application for an eTA, a passport, credit card and an email address is required. An eTA costs $7 CAD and is valid for up to five years. Among those exempted from this new requirement is U.S. citizens and travelers with a valid visa. Also, entry requirements for travelers arriving by land or sea have not changed.

To find out if a citizen of a country needs an eTA or how to apply for one, visit Government of Canada’s Electronic Travel Authorization at: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/eta.asp

There you can also check if you need a VISA to travel. In this case please make sure to submit your visa application well in advance, because usually this is a time consuming process.

Book review: The New ABCs of Research

Ben Shneiderman, a pioneer in HCI research and a university distinguished professor (with over 65,000 Google scholar citations) has authored the just published book by Oxford University Press titled "The New ABCs of Research". The book has been endorsed by the president of Stanford University, the president of the USA National Academy of Engineering and by a former director of the USA National Science Foundation. The book presents a number of principles which are supported by a host of diversified case studies. Some of the presented key principles are: combining applied and basic research produces higher research, compared to doing them separately; blending the methods of science, engineering and design produces higher impact research compared to working separately. This book is highly recommended for researchers who wish to further increase the impact of their research and for individuals who are in a position to influence the direction of research.
